This penultimate book of the series describes the adventures of Laurence and his dragon Temeraire in far-flung places: Japan, China and Russia. Old acquaintances make a reappearance and new friends and foes show up.If I say that the book was pretty much what I expected I mean it as a compliment. After all, that's why I continue to buy the books. Danger and complications, different places to see, and I even have got used to the fact that this is as much a travel story as it is an adventure story. It is an entertaining and gripping tale and it is fascinating to read how the actual events of the Napoleonic wars are included and nicely twisted to fit in the dragons. I am really curious how the last book is going to wrap up the story.If you enjoyed the travels and adventures of Laurence and Temeraire so far, Blood of Tyrants will certainly be right up your street.
Naomi Novik schafft es irgendwie, sehr wenig tatsächlichen Ist-Inhalt in ein Buch von 400 Seiten zu packen und trotzdem keine Langeweile zu provozieren. Es passiert immer etwas, die Dialoge sind erfrischend zu lesen und es ist ein angenehmer Humor.Wie irgendwo schon beschrieben ist Naomi Novik tatsächlich die Jane Austen der Fantasy vom Schreibstil her. Empfehlenswert für jene, die nicht viel Action brauchen und eine Freude daran haben, wie ein Autor mit Worten spielt.
Leider kommt die deutsche Übersetzung erst MItte Juli 2014, also habe ich mich an das englische Buch herangetraut. Das Cover ist super, viel besser als die deutschen Bücher. Inhaltlich spannend wie immer, obwohl ich aufgrund der Sprachunterschiede wahrscheinlich nicht alles mitbekommen habe. Trotzdem konnte ich das Buch einfach nicht aus der Hand legen, Bin gespannt auf die deutsche Übersetzung.
Die Bücher sind immer alle toll, ich freue mich immer auf das Nächste und bin meist traurig, dass ich solange warten muss und dann nochmal etwas länger, damit es nicht mehr zu teuer ist.

I love all of her books, they are all full of individuals with great personalities that are not too complicated to remember...even though every personality is not a human one! I have never lost track of the story or been confused as to how they got to this point in the story, where this character fits in...a truly unique and gifted author.
Ich habe mir die kindle-Edition des Del-Ray-Verlages bestellt und bin von dem Buch begeistert. Nachdem Novic ihre beiden Helden zuletzt doch mehr passiv ein Teil des Geschehens hat sein lassen, greifen Temeraire und Laurence nun wieder sehr aktiv ins Geschehen ein. Der Gedächtnisverlust des menschlichen Hauptcharakters hat den schönen Nebeneffekt, dass Ereignisse vorheriger Bücher interessant aufbereitet werden. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich zwischenzeitlich großes Mitleid mit Laurence hatte, denn ein zweiten Schiffbruch innerhalb so kurzer Zeit zu erleiden, schien mir ein hartes Los. Doch die daraus resultierende Amnesie des Charakters bringt Eigenschaften an ihm wieder hervor, die ich zum Teil ein wenig vor lauter Bemühen, sich nach dem begangenen Hochverrat zu rehabilitieren, vermisst hatte. Laurence gewinnt einen guten Teil seiner alten Steifheit zurück. Die aktive Beteiligung von Laurence und Temeraire führt zu einer schnelleren Erzählweise, so wird die Spannung bis zum Schluss aufrechterhalten. Ich kann es nun kaum erwarten, dass der letzte Band erscheint.
Another very good book from N.Novik which should dispel any doubts on her skill after the mediocre book 6.The amnesia of the main character is handled very well and has the side effect that his more interesting character traits, which he lost during the last few books, reemerge.Also, many side stories of the plot get tied up, so that book 9 can concentrate fully on the finale which Blood of Tyrants opens in a very enjoyable way. And of course this book also provides more insight into the world of Temeraire, either by seeing new lands, hearing stories about them or getting a more in depth look at some countries already visited.One downside is that the new side character introduced in this book is rather passive and his presence is not noticed most of the time after chapter 1.
