Dieses Buch ließ mich etwas ratlos zurück. Einerseits ist die Vorstellung einer solchen Gesellschaft so abstrus, dass ich sie sofort zurückweisen möchte, andererseits scheint es so wahrscheinlich, dass es nicht schwer zu glauben ist, ein solcher Staat könne wirklich existieren. Manche Bilder der Autorin sind brutal und verstörend, vielleicht macht aber gerade das die Geschichte so real. Ich habe sehr mit Offred gelitten, denn ich glaube in einem frauenfeindlichen System aufzuwachsen und eine andere Alternative nicht einmal zu kennen ist eine Sache, aber wenn man aus einer Gesellschaft kommt, in der Frauen emanzipiert waren und zumindest auf dem Papier den Männern gleichgestellt, ist dieses Leben umso härter. Offred ist eher die stille Rebellin, sie wehrt sich nicht aktiv gegen ihr Schicksal oder wählt den einfachen Ausweg. Dennoch ist sie neugierig und wach und ergibt sich nicht in ihr Schicksal, wie andere. Sie verspürt heimliche Lust am Verbotenen, wie die Sexparty zu der ihr Kommandant sie mitnimmt und bei der sie ihre Freundin aus der Zeit davor wiedertrifft oder die Liebschaft mit dem Chauffeur. Es würde sie das Leben kosten, wenn irgendwer dahinter käme, gedeckt wird sie jedoch von der Hausherrin, die unbedingt ein Kind will um jeden Preis. Die Vorstellung einer solchen Welt ist gruselig, aber wenn man sich die Fanatiker auf dieser Welt anschaut, egal welcher Religion sie angehören und der lange Zeitraum den es brauchte Frauen als ebenbürtig anzuerkennen, dann scheint die beschriebene Welt nur einen Steinwurf entfernt. Das ist es vielleicht was mich an dieser Geschichte so verstört hat.Dieses Buch ist zeitlos, auch wenn schon in den 1980gern geschrieben, scheint es heute noch aktuell, denn die Dummen und die Fanatiker werden nicht weniger. Ich war mir lange unschlüssig ob ich die Story liebe oder hasse. Ich habe mich letztendlich für lieben entschieden.
The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), a dystopian novel written by Margaret Atwood, is set in a future country called “Gilead†where a totalitarian Christian regime has overthrown the government before stripping women of their rights. Due to infertility caused by pollution and sexually transmitted diseases, fertile females generally are assigned the role of the handmaid- a person responsible for having children for the higher-ranked wives. The story is told through the perspective of the handmaid Offred who reports not only about the circumstances under this regime, but also gives a vivid account of her former life.Even though Offred is the protagonist of this novel, she is not the typical heroine since she remains rather passive throughout the story: she appears to have accepted her fate as a handmaid for “her†high-ranked commander. While she does often think about her former family and also expresses her regret at missing out on her daughter’s childhood, she does not actively take action in order to change her situation. As far as her character traits are concerned, she has enough faults to appear human without them being such grave ones that the readers lose sympathy for her.Despite being a dystopian novel, Margaret Atwood manages to deal with various thorny issues, one of which is the subject of power and control. In Gilead, everything is controlled by the regime: this becomes extremely perceptible when one looks at the handmaids’ names. Each of them starts with the prefix “of†followed by her Commander’s name – therefore, their names change with every move to another house, which is extremely offensive since this also takes a part of their identity away.The author also deals with the topics of feminism and acceptance. One of the characters in the books, Moira, is definitely a strong representative of the former: not only is she a lesbian, but she also manages to escape the Red Centre where the future handmaids are schooled. This aspect will definitely appeal to readers who are looking for a more active figure. As far as acceptance is concerned, it soon becomes clear that quite a few women appear to remain indifferent to the loss of their rights as long as they still have some kind of power, even if it only consists of managing the households. This is underlined by the quotation: “Truly amazing, what people can get used to, as long as there are a few compensations.â€While reading this evocative story, one will soon discover that even seemingly banal thing such as magazines or games can be taken away from us and that we often underrate the importance of such little parts of our everyday lives.The most shocking about the book is that it isn’t so surreal after all: some features actually exist in our world as well, for instance extreme religious movements or regions where women have no rights. Therefore, some may find this book too disturbing and fear-inducing or even consider it to be preposterous due to the way these negative occurrences are combined. I, however, consider it to be a riveting read, especially since the plot as well as the ending are far from being predictable.In either way, when deciding to read this book, one should be prepared to be left haunted by a story that is unique in its own way and which may induce one to question our lifestyle as well: do we really appreciate the opportunities we have to live our lives to the fullest? Would we be prepared to fight for our rights if they were taken away from us or would we resign as well?“A rat in a maze is free to go anywhere, as long as it stays inside the maze.â€
Atwoods Dystopien verdienen einen Platz neben den anderen großen Vertretern dieser Gattung, 1984 und Brave New World.Mit "The Handmaid's Tale" gelingt ihr eine düstere Zukunftvision, die fast dreißig Jahre später angesichts des neuen Erstarkens von "neuen Rechten", religiösem Fundamentalismus und starren Genderrollen heute fast aktueller erscheint als in den frühen 1980ern, und damit ähnlich prophetisch wirkt wie Orwells und Huxleys Romane.Atwood befindet sich hier noch in der Frühphase ihres Schaffens, aber dennoch gehört dieses Buch zum Besten, was sie geschrieben hat. Pflichtlektüre!
Mit The Handmaids Tale hat Margaret Atwood alles geschafft was ein dystopischer Klassiker schaffen muss. Beklemmende Atmosphäre, realistische Unterdrückung, Identifizierung mit der Hauptfigur und vor allem: die leise nagende Nervosität um die Frage ob so etwas tatsächlich passieren kann. Dazu kommt das letzte Kapitel, was meiner Ansicht nach zu den besten Buchenden aller Zeiten gehört. Kein Ende spekulativer Fiktion hat mich jemals auf so beissend ironische Art und Weise aus einer erfundenen Welt in die Realität zurückgerissen.
Ich habe mir ''The Handmaid's Tale'' bestellt und war sofort gefesselt.Die Geschichte ist einfach realistisch und toll beschrieben.Leichtes Englisch, man müsste eventuell einzelne Wörter nachschlagen aber ansonsten gut zu verstehen.Ich bin sehr begeistert und habe daraufhin direkt die Serie dazu geschaut - ebenfalls sehr empfehlenswert (gibt es auch mit Untertitel)Abgesehen vom Inhalt des Buches, fand ich das Material schlecht. (Deshalb auch einen Stern Abzug)Ich persönlich kann es nicht leiden, wenn sich Bücher nach einigen Malen lesen ''aufblähen'' und somit nicht mehr schön liegen/stehen.Aber das ist Ansichtssache.
