As a hardcore Gears fan, I've read all of the books and most of the comics made available. Ascendance is worth the buy, the master/protege roles between Marcus & Kait are enjoyable, but Oscar's problem with that is unexplored and quite disappointing. JD and Del are bland as ever.Seeing Baird make a return was nice, not as good as Anvil Gate though. I felt his character made dumb choices for the sake of unnecessarily furthering his sub-plot. Jinn is still a c*** but we did get a bit more background on her past.All in all this could have been a Gears 4 DLC but instead you get to read it. Here's to hoping Gears 5 Campaign actually makes me care about the characters. JD is a husk of Marcus and it seems like Kait potentially can be redeeming for the series especially in terms of being a descendant of Myrahh she has a richer backstory that dates back as far as Dr. Niles' Sires of Project New Hope and Mt. Kadar.What happened to the Sires, what about the Nexus?
This novel takes place after the events of Gears of War 4, and serves as a bridging story to Gears 5. Minister Jinn still doesnt believe that the Locust are back and she wants proof. We see how the Swarm force has turned into an insurmountable force and why our heroes go their own ways.The book, since the first chapter, is filled with pure adrenaline. Skirmishes against the Swarm are peppered throughout the beginning of the novel. First Act is the calm before the storm. But it is packed with interesting tidbits about our new characters in the franchise as well as old ones. And after the First Act all hell breaks lose. We see more action. More destruction. More heartache.The writer, Jason M. Hough, does an amazing job utilizing the characters and their traits. Every word spoken feels true to that character. Every action taken as well.I dont want to give anything away but not only do the Gears fight in close quarters and resort to last minute decisions. But the adrenaline that I felt in some of the later parts of the book made me continue on reading. And the Last Stand was amazingly written to give you enough points of views that it felt like a description of a movie battle scene.As to comparing it to other books in the Gears of War saga this one stands tall. I prefer this one above all the books that Karen Traviss wrote. I will say that this one compares more to Anvil's Gate in the way that it sets up an amazing firefight at the end.All in all a great read for Gear fans, and an amazing Sci-Fi book. Totally recommend it!
The book itself is very high quality and well-made.The story is honestly so captivating and I never like to stop reading. After I stop it feels as if I just watched a Gears movie or something. It’s very well written and the characters/dialogue are exactly as they should be. The writer completely knows what he’s doing.My book came in an envelope too and I was a bit surprised as to why they’d ship it like that, mine was fine but I hope the guy who gave it 1 star for that would re-write the review. I’m sure Amazon would have accommodated him anyway. The review is for the product, don’t give the author/company bad ratings for their product because of what Amazon did (always does :/ )I saw the book had 3 stars and was appalled and confused until I saw it was because of a shipping issue.
This novel was good and gives readers insight into the aftermath of Gears 4, however, it isn’t as good as the previous novels and leaves crucial issues unexplored.While I think all Gears fans will enjoy the book, it doesn’t do enough to further the Story. It leaves Kait relationship with Oscar and her father unexplored. JD remains a bore with only Del giving him life.It would’ve been nice to learn anything new about the pendant, Marcus and JD, Reyna etc., but it just doesn’t happen.
